Talking Pregnancy: Body Image, Politics, and Sex

This event has been cancelled. The scheduled speaker hosted “Let’s Chat About Asexuality” earlier this week. That event did not meet Sex Week’s standards for education and inclusiveness. As such, in collaboration with the speaker, it has been decided that future events by the speaker will not be hosted this week. Sex Week sincerely apologizes for any discomfort or pressure that event caused. We are committed to doing better in the future.

Bygone Badass Broads

Have you ever wondered, where are the women in my history textbook? So has author and historian Mackenzi Lee. On a mission to bring their stories to light, she started the weekly twitter thread #bygonebadassbroads. Each week, she would highlight a different, largely unknown woman. It is now memorialized in book format as “Bygone Badass Broads: 52 Women Who Changed the World.” At this event, Lee will talk about Bygone Badass Broads and the little-known women who influenced history. Lee holds a BA in history and an MFA in writing for children and young adults. Her books include This Monstrous ThingA Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue and its sequel, and Bygone Badass Broads: 52 Women Who Changed the World. A Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue was a Stonewall Book Award Honoree for its LGBTQ+ representation.

Religion, Sex, and You 2

The relationship between sex and religion is one that has been particularly contentious. Sex Week seeks to explore this relationship through a panel on religion and sex. We hope to discuss different religion’s views on subjects such as sex and marriage, sexual education, and contraception (among many other topics). We would like to have representation from a number of different religions throughout the Charlotte area and hope to foster respectful conversation about these topics between them. The moderator for this panel will be Dr. Kent Brintnall, affiliate faculty member of the Women’s and Gender Studies program. His research largely focuses on the relationship between religion and sexuality. Current confirmed panelists include Dr. Barbara Thiede (Religious Studies Department, Jewish Studies), Dr. Nancy Allison, Rev. Ayya, Buddhist Nun, and ordained Buddhist Gen Kelsang Tilopa.
